.066 Radiance
West Vancouver Community Centre Public Art
RADIANCE expresses the universal symbol of Hope. It comprises four groups of diagonal stainless steel tubing, each group in turn consists of multiple strands. Each group sits slightly apart from the others and orients slightly differently. On the top of each tube, a dichroic lens of shifting color is outfitted within the tube. The public artwork is visible from all directions. From afar, the sculpture appears like a swell of shimmering lines radiating towards the sky, with a gesture that is playful, dynamic, and uplifting. Approaching the plaza, one soon perceives the emergence of an abstract shape resembling two pairs of V’s raised towards the sky, linking together into a W – for West Vancouver.
The public artwork will be located in front of the Seniors’ Activity Centre, at the terminus of the southeast promenade upon entering the plaza. By itself, it is both a landmark and a gateway, with an iconic form that embodies the universal value of unity. Contextually it is an extension of, as well as a counterpoint to, the existing rocks-and-water feature. Together they create a series of focal points stretching across the breadth of the plaza, thereby unifying the space and bringing the Seniors’ Activity Centre, its herb gardens and the grassy slope into the overall spatial composition.
With full exposure to the southern sun, the public artwork will cast shimmers to the concrete, to the rocks, to the water. A symphony of light and colours is created, and everything participates in its becoming. Up close, the overall iconic gesture of the sculpture yields to more intimate discovery of colours and reflections, presented at a scale that engages adults and children alike.
